With Harefield United committed to a cup game, Northwood moved back to the top of the Middlesex League with this confident win over Mill End.
If the chances created had been taken Northwood would have run up double figures but the midfield genius of Gould and Harvey was wasted by the poor marksmanship of Byrne and Horsford.
In the first half Northwood soon gained the upper hand, and when Byrne broke free on the right his cross-shot was slid in by a defender.
Mill End were never really in the game after this and a feature of the match was the number of times full-backs Harding and Bailey attacked, as did sweeper Dibbens.
A long clearance from defence was headed onto Gould, who raced clear of the defence to calmly hit Woods’ second goal. Within minutes Northwood were three up when Dodd’s corner was headed in by Byrne.
Straight after the interval Northwood made it four when Harvey, following up an effort from Horsford, slotted home.
The remainder of the match was all Northwood and the build-up towards goal was always good to watch, but the finishing let them down.
Both Byrne and Horsford should have had hat-tricks as Harvey and Gould carved the visitors’ defence to shreds. The woodwork also saved Mill End on several occasions.
